Nice! I was putting out the towels one morning on a lounger on the beach, and this massive lizard walked past. You don't see that too often in Europe. Oh, and walking back to the room one night, heard a thud and saw this thing gripping a tree trunk, must have been a monkey?

As mentioned you can fly to Penang in 20 minutes and there is about 15 flights a day to KL . If you wanted to do it that way
You are probably flying out From KUL I would imagine , not the low cost carrier Terminal for Air Asia though those airports are very close
http://www.fireflyz.com.my/ Langkawi-Penang
Air Asia= Penang- KLIA 2
Malaysia airlines - Penang KUL
If you go , stay in Georgetown, you can stay at the beaches in Batu Ferengi but its a long way , hour, out of Georetown
Georgetown is an old colonial port town, plenty of pub Bars , Indian food if you like it. Plenty of little quaint old houses turned into guest houses, Booking .com has loads. Food is ridiculously cheap in Malaysia , beers the other way, local beer like tiger about 3 to 3.50 a pint , imported Stongbow 6 quid a pint,Heiny4 -50

Koh Samui is ok. Maybe developing a bit too quickly, but nice beaches and a bit of night life. Can be a shit to get to if you don't want to fork out on Bangkok Airways. I had a nice large double room in a guesthouse in Chaweng for less than £20 a night.

Joey Woodwork, Not trying to put the mockers on it, but if you are going for a couple of weeks thats about 10 days too much. You can easily get over to Penang either fly 10 minutes of get the boat a few hours , Penang is much more lively but not cheap
If you need to know anything about Penang give me a shout , I lived there for 5 years

I spent a week in Langkawi in May, a few years ago, met up with malayammer and w67. I stayed at The Sheraton, the room was massive, most of the rooms were in separate blocks in the hotel grounds. Had its own pool and beach.
Take mosquito repellant, is about the only thing I can recommend. Oh, and it's proper humid.

The problem with May to August is although its hot its the height of the Rainy season , so the Humidity is horrific. You do have fully clear days and fully pissing down days
If you want hot British summer type weather, 29-33 clear skies, very little rain , November , December, Jan and then it cranks up to the hottest part of the year March April where the sun seems to be in the midday position for hours on end. Thailand is a big country , almost 2000 ks long , so depend s where you go to what weather you'll get , but generally its as above
